MVCAP Serves Darke County
Miami Valley Community Action Partnership knows the strongest responses to homelessness and housing instability come from networks of partners working together.
“Recent public conversation in Greenville has raised important questions about homelessness, housing instability, public safety, mental health, and the resources available to people and families in crisis,” said MVCAP President and CEO Erin Jeffries. “We want to reassure the community that we are here to help, but also that Darke County is served by a larger regional coalition that always welcomes new partners.”
Darke County is part of Region 13 of the Ohio Balance of State Continuum of Care, which also includes Preble, Miami, Shelby, Logan, and Champaign counties. Region 13 helps coordinate rapid rehousing and homelessness prevention services, supports collaboration across counties, and works to distribute available funding. MVCAP is one part of this broader framework, working alongside other partners to respond to housing instability across the region.
“We take that responsibility seriously and are committed to helping local concerns connect with the broader regional response,” Jeffries added.
MVCAP’s Darke County emergency shelter will reopen later this summer after critical safety updates are completed, and the agency continues to assist those experiencing housing instability in multiple ways.
“MVCAP staff continue to respond to calls, review each household’s situation, screen for available programs and help connect people to resources such as Rapid Re-Housing funds, alternative shelter options and short-term local supports,” Jeffries said. “We want people to call us if they need help. Our response to homelessness in Darke County is more than a building.”
Other MVCAP services offered in Darke County include utility assistance, food assistance, weatherization, emergency home repair, and homebuyer and financial counseling.
Jeffries emphasized that MVCAP and the Darke County Metropolitan Housing Authority are separate and independent entities, each governed by its own board. MVCAP serves as managing agent for the Darke County MHA Housing Choice Voucher program under a management agreement, while the MHA maintains its own oversight responsibilities and decision-making authority.
“These current challenges are made harder by the reality that state and federal homelessness response funds have diminished in some areas and have not kept pace with the need in local communities,” she continued. “This is an important time for concerned residents to engage elected officials at the local, state, and federal levels and advocate for sustained investment in homelessness response, housing stability, and affordable housing.”
“Homelessness is complex and requires a coordinated, compassionate, and practical community response,” Jeffries said. “No single program or agency can resolve the full issue alone. The community’s concern is a good and hopeful starting point to build on existing partnerships, support community safety, and recognize the dignity of people experiencing homelessness and housing instability.”
