How to Make a Successful PRC Application

Published On: February 2nd, 2026

MVCAP’s partnership with Montgomery County Job and Family Services is paying off for residents who need help from the Prevention, Retention, and Contingency Program.

In 2025, staff processed just over 3,000 applications, distributing $623,777 for assistance ranging from rent assistance to car repairs.

Demand for the program is high and most delays happen because submitted applications are missing required information or documentation. To set your application up for success follow these tips:

  • The “Ready to Go” Document Rule: Your application cannot be processed until every piece of paper is received. To skip the wait:
    1. Submit everything at once. Send all required supporting documents in with your application. The list is slightly different for each form of assistance. View all requirements by clicking here.
    2. Check the examples. Please read our document descriptions carefully. Even if a document seems close enough, PRC required specific details to qualify for the program.
    3. Pro Tip. If a specific item is listed, that is the only item that can be accepted. For example, the application requires Social Security cards for all household members. This means that a Social Security card cannot be exchanged for a Social Security number on a tax form.
  • The Landlord/Lender Connection: Let your landlord or mortgage lender know you are applying so we can work together from the start.
    1. Have the talk. Ask your landlord or mortgage company if they will accept a third-party payment from Montgomery County through the PRC program.
    2. Give permission. Tell them you are working with PRC so they are authorized to share your account details when they are contacted. This prevents days of phone or email “tag.”
  • Know your numbers: PRC is designed to be a bridge to stability but it has specific limits.
    1. Check the maximums. Ensure you know the maximum amount PRC can pay for your specific need.
    2. Close the gap. If you balance is higher than our limit, have a plan to cover the difference or pay down to those limits before you apply.
