Grant Will Increase Domestic Violence Services

A new grant in support of crime victims will enable MVCAP to provide 24-hour shelter staff and hotline monitoring for victims of domestic violence and their children.

MVCAP’s Domestic Violence Services Program (DVS) received more than $97,000 from the State of Ohio’s allocation under the federal Victims of Crime Act (VOCA), passed in 1984.

According to DVS Program Director Courtney Griffith, the grant will fund a new, full-time shelter monitor for the Preble County program. Funds will also pay for contract help with another domestic violence services agency who will answer MVCAP’s domestic violence hotline during unstaffed hours.

“The shelter monitor plays a critical role in ensuring clients are safe and served at all times,” Griffith said. “Partnering with another agency whose staff are trained in trauma-informed care and crisis intervention, extends our reach to help more survivors.”

In shelter, the monitor will be responsible for completing intake paperwork, shelter orientation, safety planning, general shelter oversight, supportive listening and more. The monitor also answers the hotline responding to crisis service requests, providing crisis intervention, safety planning, education and information on rights and resources and supportive listening.

The grant will also partially fund DVS’ existing case manager as well and furnishings and food for the shelter.

DVS serves survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, human trafficking and stalking as well as their children.
