MVCAP Opposes Potential Utility Rate Hikes
Ohio utility companies are trying to raise rates and MVCAP is fighting for low-income families.
Both CenterPoint and AES have applied to the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio to increase their rates. CenterPoint is seeking a 25% increase and AES a 14% increase. MVCAP CEO Erin Jeffries testified at public hearings held locally in opposition to both increases.
“We see the real-world impact every day,” Jeffries said. “The residents who turn to us for support are doing everything they can to keep up. Many are already making tough decisions between paying utility bills, buying groceries and filling prescriptions.”
A public hearing on CenterPoint’s request was held July 29; AES’ public hearing was held Aug. 7.
“Even in good times, many of the households we serve struggle to pay their utility bills,” Jeffries said. “A single unaffordable bill can throw an entire household into crisis, forcing impossible choices between heat and groceries, or between medicine and housing.”
