Improvements Coming to Greene County Shelters
Families staying at MVCAP’s Donnellan Shelter properties in Greene County will soon benefit from a series of improvements designed to make the properties safer, more comfortable and more welcoming.
“We strive to provide a safer and updated environment to live and work in,” said Greene County Director Brent Robinson. “As our participants transition from literal homelessness into our emergency shelter program, my hope is that this will provide a sense of comfort, motivation to work toward a place of their own.”
Work is nearing completion on several improvements throughout the properties, including:
- Installing new flooring in the six emergency shelter units and office
- Replacing kitchen base cabinets, counter tops, and sinks as well as painting cabinets
- Replacing exterior broken door emergency shelter
- Installing new sinks in transitional family shelter in six units
- Replacing interior solid core doors in transitional family shelter
- Installing two new ceiling fans in the office
- Replacing fencing on the entire property
Generous donors and funders have also allowed for purchase of furniture and household products to make residents feel comfortable and “safe at home,” Robinson said.
Those items include Welcome Tubs filled with sheets, toilet paper, paper towels, laundry detergent, dish soap, bathroom towels, bathroom soap and shampoo. Other items were:
- New and additional bed frames
- New mattresses
- Mops, brooms, trash cans and cleaning supplies for each unit
- Additional sheets, toilet paper and trash bags
“Making these improvements and making residents comfortable is an important part of their journey into safe and affordable housing,” Robinson said. “Helping them mentally prepare for permanent housing is just as important as keeping them sheltered. This funding has helped us do just that.”
Funders include the Mathile Family Foundation, United Way of Greater Dayton and other local partners.
