The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides free tax preparation assistance for low-to-moderate income individuals and families. These taxpayers are often eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit and/or the Child Tax Credit, which can result in thousands of dollars in tax refunds.
Unfortunately, many taxpayers are not aware that they are eligible for these refunds. They may go to tax preparers who will charge several hundred dollars to prepare their return or worse, have them take out a high-interest loan against their tax refund.
VITA is seeking volunteers to prepare tax returns during the January-April tax filing season. No experience is needed. Complete IRS-certified training and materials will be provided either online or in a classroom.
Volunteers generally serve about three to five hours a week, but hours are flexible based on the volunteer’s schedule. Tax preparation sites are located at Community Action Partnership and other sites throughout the Dayton area.
Tax Professionals who volunteer with VITA can earn Continuing Education Credits. All volunteers will enjoy the satisfaction of making a difference in the lives of thousands of people and helping return millions of dollars to these households and the local economy.
