Emergency home repair help for low-income Kettering homeowners
December 22, 2016
Kettering homeowners who are struggling to keep their homes safe, secure warm and habitable can now apply for free assistance if they meet guidelines based on income and number of residents.
The emergency home repair program, a joint venture between the Community Action Partnership of the Greater Dayton Area and the City of Kettering, was created to help people on fixed incomes or those who may be experiencing financial setbacks stay in their homes.
“Priority will be given to emergency conditions that present an imminent danger to the health and safety of the homes residents,” said Barry Strahorn, Assistant Director of Weatherization for CAP Dayton. “Emergencies like lack of running water, heating or cooling system failures; hazardous electrical systems, sewer line issues, or structural damage to roofs or ceilings are things we can step in and solve pretty quick.”
The program is for insured single-family homeowners who are either current on property taxes or have a payment plan. The assistance is free for those who have been in the home for at least a year and stay in the home for at least an additional year with a few other conditions. The income guidelines are based on making less than 80% of the median income for the county. For example, a family of four can’t make more than $47,600 to be eligible.
The program also allows people who meet the income guidelines to ask for help with preventive inspection and maintenance for things like; inspection of furnace, water heater, water pump or well, septic tank cleaning, installation of smoke alarms, minor plumbing or electrical repairs. Fixing floors, stairs or walks, which can be critical for seniors who may have mobility issues, is also possible. Weatherization assistance is also available to make homes more energy efficient, as well as replacement of screens, repairing broken windows or fixing doors.
