Mount Enon Baptist Church in Dayton graciously hosted the celebration for Community Action Partnership of the Greater Dayton Area’s first ever graduates of its Getting Ahead in a Just Gettin’ By World program. The 16-week course, inspired by Phil DeVol’s book of the same name, gives participants the tools to overcome poverty by building their resources for a more prosperous life for themselves, their families, and their communities. Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley, City Commissioner Chris Shaw, state senate candidate Gene Krebs, and DeVol himself were among the dignitaries there to congratulate the graduates. LaVar Glover, Self-Sufficiency Director for CAP Dayton, co-facilitates the program.

“Getting Ahead is an agenda-free, facilitated learning experience,” Glover said. “Its participants are called investigators –investigating the issues and causes of poverty within their lives and community.  This graduating class has truly bought into the process and fully owns the title.”
