Community Action Partnership of the Greater Dayton Area has hired LaVar Glover as the new director of Self-Sufficiency. He will be heading a new program called “Getting Ahead in a Just Gettin’ by World” which builds upon the “Bridges Out of Poverty” framework developed by Ruby K. Payne PhD. This program helps individuals and families living in poverty to find resources to improve their lives and move toward self-sufficiency. One of the unique features of this program is that it is facilitated by graduates of the program. Glover created a similar program in 2009.
His love for the Dayton community and helping others pushed him to create The Glover Youth Program, which is a non-profit built to provide youth in foster care and/or Juvenile Courts in Ohio with residential placement, mentoring, life skills development, and therapeutic treatment services. Glover believes that “The Glover Youth Program will live on forever as a symbol of hope, teamwork, community, and love.”
A Dayton native, Glover attended Jefferson Township Schools and spent most of his childhood involved in sports and activities in the Miami Valley area. Many days were spent at the First Dayton Little League Baseball Park, Wesley Center, The Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, and Madden Golf Course.
Glover played varsity football at the University of Cincinnati graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice. Drafted into the National Football League by the Pittsburg Steelers, and later signed by the Cincinnati Bengals and the Detroit Lions. After three years with the NFL, he played in the Arena and Canadian Football Leagues
for the next seven.
Glover was the head coach of the Dayton Sharks of the Pro Indoor Football League, and recently coached football, basketball and track at Fairmont High School, while also working and coaching at Kettering Middle School.
The first classes will begin in the end of April at Mt. Enon Church on W. Third Street. More information will be
